Monitoring city noise pollution using crowdsourcing techniques+ identifying sources using IOT Technologies
The noise pollution in Nicosia Old City is related to health and well-being issues affecting both business and residents. By actively involving citizens and acquiring real time data, QuietCity project achieved to identify the key sources of noises. Our solution provides the municipality of Nicosia with the necessary guidelines and tools to assist in the decision-making process on creating action plans to reduce the noise pollution in the old city. Our system is comparable with other commercially available systems but at a fraction of a price, since it utilises the latest technologies.
Why is this important?
Loud noises trigger a stress response in our bodies, which causes a surge of adrenaline and a rise in blood pressure.
“Excessive noise seriously harms human health and interferes with people’s daily activities at school, at work, at home and during leisure time. It can disturb sleep, cause cardiovascular and psychophysiological effects, reduce performance and provoke annoyance responses and changes in social behaviour.
Traffic noise alone is harmful to the health of almost every third person in the WHO European Region. One in five Europeans is regularly exposed to sound levels at night that could significantly damage health.”
